Thru-hiking (for instance, taking the Pacific Crest Trail from Canada to Mexico) takes a few months and thousands of dollar's worth of supplies, but you can of course do a smaller segment. Speaking of camping - if you really like to rough it, you can 'cross country' by foot on one of our national trails. If you bring a bit of camping equipment, you can camp in national forests and state parks for much cheaper than the cost of a motel room.

For the most part, in smaller towns you would be dealing with motels. Hostels are generally only in large cities with tourist attractions. If you stick to larger cities, flights might work out best. There are a few trains you can take, but they are expensive and limited in where they go. Greyhound buses are relatively cheap, go pretty much anywhere, and will allow you to see the sights off the freeway without the grind of endless driving. There are other options for crossing the country. You would also need to find some sort of short term liability insurance. Again I really don't know the legality of a foreign citizen doing this, so if you are interested you will need to do more research. I'm not sure of the legality of this, but if you really want to drive, you might buy a car in your starting location, and sell it when you are done. And you will pay even more extra for the convenience of dropping off the car in a different city (unless you plan on crossing the country twice).

Cross country means you would put thousands of miles on the car, which you will have to pay extra for. Many rental companies will not rent to people your age the ones that do tack on extra fees. Renting a car is not cheap, ESPECIALLY if you are under 25. Any tips on car hire companies, money saving, hostels etc? We'll be 21 when we go.
